Atlas Free is doing amazing around the world through their Local Partner Network. Many of you, if not most are very familiar with Atlas Free, but if you are not yet, please take a few minutes and go through their site to learn more about their work around the world.

The “Our Work” page will give you a lot of info on how they work and what type of work is being done around the world. The “Media” page has a few videos which drive home the why behind the work. The middle video, “True Freedom” is a short fictional video which demonstrates the journey to freedom. This was filmed in a home that Dan Lao and Josh Hebert had the privilege of visiting a few years ago and is an accurate portrayal of the work being done there.

July 3rd – 5th – Climb Mt Adams!

We ask each climber to set a minimum fundraising goal of $3,000. Many set a higher goal. Over the years as we have dialed in this target goal we have found that most hit it, many exceed it and some blow it out of the water.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, check out Atlas Free’s newly released digital version of their 2022 Annual Report. It is full of incredible stories of impact and amazing stats about what fundraisers like you were able to help make happen. As you’re talking to family and friends or reaching out to business sponsors, this is a great resource to share.

There are also a variety of fundraising resources in the Adventure Philanthropy Dropmark folder. From talking points to letters for approaching businesses as well as a fundraising guide, this is your one-stop shop for everything fundraising. For those of you who haven’t made your fundraising page yet, please head over to our Climb for Captives campaign page to get started.

A Few Notes:

  • You DO NOT need to bring a belay device.
  • Bring either 2 locking carabiners or 1 locking carabiner and 1 non-locking carabiner.
  • Bring 2 full size Nalgene bottles (at least 2 liters). No hydration packs or soft sided water bottles please.
  • You do not need to bring water filtration. We have group filters for prepping water.
  • You do not need to bring a climbing rope. We provide all ropes.
  • You do not need to bring a stove and fuel. Stoves and fuel will be provided. I know some people do prefer to bring their own stove and misc items like Aero Press. Feel free if you want to, but no need to carry the extra items if you don’t want to. See note on Caffe Lusso in food section.
  • Tents will be provided.
  • NO COTTON clothing.
  • You MUST bring a very warm puffy down jacket for breaks at night and the summit. It can get very cold.
  • We will be on dirt trail most of day one. Some prefer to wear a trail shoe instead of rigid mountaineering boots and carry boots on their pack.

Renting Gear:

  • If you plan on renting any gear, make sure you make your reservation tomorrow. For a Monday climb, pick up on Sunday and for a Wednesday climb, pick up on Tuesday. You WILL NOT HAVE TIME the morning of the climb to pick up any rental gear.

Food is a personal choice, but here’s what Josh brings:

Day 1 – Josh’s food

  • 3-4 large bagel sandwiches that I eat over the first couple days. They weigh a lot but hit the spot.
  • Regular trail food and lunch food for hike up to base camp.
  • Full size Mountain House (or similar freeze dried meal which requires only hot water to cook) for dinner.

Day 2 – Josh’s food

  • Either oatmeal or Mountain House breakfast.
  • Snacks for throughout the day.
  • Mountain House meal for dinner.

Summit Push – Josh’s food

  • Bar, oatmeal or meal for breakfast.
  • During our summit attempt I will consume 1 high calorie item approximately every 45-60 minutes. I use a mixture of GU packs, Shot block and energy waffles.
  • I also bring an extra sandwich to eat at or near the summit to refuel for the descent.
  • Misc snack from camp back out to car.
